About this deal

That's not the case here and even the three megapixel Low Light mode delivered a pleasingly sharp result when faced with our regular doll test subjects. screen, and while you may be surprised to hear that the Canon IXUS 220 HS doesn’t have the now obligatory 3in screen, any bigger, and the overall size of the camera would have been compromised, though a slightly higher resolution than the 230k dots would have been nice.

There is also a decent amount of noise visible on low-light images, which is to be expected as the ISO climbs. but it's still going strong; I love using it and it takes fantastic photographs (much nicer than my Canon point-and-shoot). These include Creative filter effects – Monochrome, Toy Camera, Fish-eye, Super Vivid, Poster Effect, Colour Accent, Colour Swap and Miniature. It does, however, stand out from the crowd by virtue of its noise-free results at higher ISO settings, Full-HD video, HDMI output, and fun digital effects filters. three or six frames per second to provide a time-lapse movie style effect, further extending the camera’s creative uses. With the above allowing for instant, one-touch filming no matter what alternative stills shooting mode might have been in play at the time, here that's at a Full HD 1920x1080 pixels and a standard rate of 24 frames per second.

As the 220 HS is advertised as a camera that excels in low-light situations, we decided to put it through its paces. In Smart Auto mode the ELPH 300 HS / IXUS 220 HS uses scene detection to determine the best exposure. The IXUS 220 HS struggles somewhat under the incandescent lighting in our studio, whether using auto white-balance or the incandescent preset.

Comparing this with my first digital camera, a Canon Powershot S330 bought almost exactly a decade ago, provides a nice illustration of how much camera technology has improved. AF performance is very good for a compact of this class, locking on with ease and rarely hunting, if at all and the focus-tracking AF mode works well, though don’t expect too much from it. But if the scene has some really bright (in the sun) or dark (shadows) parts, auto mode is untrustworthy once again - pictures could be great, but also very bad - with colors being washed out, or "burnt" (overexposed, too bright areas that lost all the details, or people`s faces looking unnaturally pink). Ranged around the dial on the back are exposure compensation options (a modest /- 2EV), flash settings, display settings and focus adjustment between infinity and macro.
